Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Games 2021 have been rescheduled
The World Games Return to the US in 2022:
An Introduction
The World Games are returning to the US in 2022 for the first time since their inception in 1981. From July 7 to July 17, 2022, international competitors will gather to compete in a range of disciplines in Birmingham, Alabama. The Games are organized and administered by the International World Games Association (IWGA). They are held every four years in the year after the Summer Olympic Games. The sports that are included in the World Games are not Olympic sports, though they may become Olympic sports in the future, as was the case for beach volleyball and badminton, to mention two examples.
To be considered for participation in the World Games a discipline must be international in scope and its sports federation must be a member of the IWGA. In each discipline participation is restricted to elite athletes and/or teams as determined by the discipline’s international governing body. How does this apply to pétanque? The Féderation International de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP) is our international governing body, while the Federation of Pétanque, U.S.A.(FPUSA), is our national governing body. Through FIPJP we are members of the IWGA and the IOC (International Olympic Committee). |
The FIPJP will designate eight national teams to represent the sport of pétanque at the Games. One of those eight teams will be from the host country, the US. The selection process for that team was developed by myself with input from the FPUSA Sport Committee. Also included below is the WADA Prohibited list. Testing is mandatory for the Games.
