SOME OF YOU might be curious as to the difference between petanque federations and confederations. The FPUSA as a federation, belongs to the FIPJP, the international federation, but we also belong to the Pan America Confederation, which is comprised of federations from the Americas. Every federation that belongs to the FIPJP also belongs to a confederation. The PanAm Confederation is one of the smallest, with only 5 member federations, and according to Mike Pegg, President of the European Confederation, the European is "the largest Confederation with 40 member federations." I asked Mike how the teams from European countries are chosen for World Championships and he said "For all World Championships, with the exception of the Men's Triples, any European Federation is eligible to participate. However, for the World Championship Triples men, Europe is limited to the number of teams/federations it may send, just as every other Continental Confederation. Our allocation is 25 teams."
For the men's triples Europe fills their allocation "via a European Triples Championship in the previous year - so we [via the FIPJP] invite our top 25 to represent Europe." The FPUSA participated in the Pan America Confederation qualifier in October 2021 in Mexico City for a place in the men's World Championship triples this December. The PanAm Confederation is allocated 3 places. Team FPUSA finished second behind Canada. Comments are closed.
